COR Element 15 deals with First Aid

It is never acceptable for anyone to be injured at work, but what is worse, is not being able to provide the necessary first aid or emergency medical attention when someone is injured. The presence of trained first aiders on-site and appropriate first aid equipment provides some assurance that a minor injury will be prevented from evolving into a far more serious condition.

In Ontario, all workplaces are required to review and ensure compliance with Regulation 1101, First Aid Requirements, which includes but not limited to the following stipulations:

  • Every employer employing not more than five workers in any one shift at a place of employment shall provide and maintain at the place of employment a first aid station with a first aid box.

  • Every employer employing more than five workers and not more than fifteen workers in any one shift at a place of employment shall provide and maintain a first aid station with a first aid box.

  • Every employer employing more than fifteen and fewer than 200 workers in any one shift at a place of employment shall provide and maintain at the place of employment one stretcher, two blankets and a first aid station with a first aid box.

  • Every employer employing 200 or more workers in any one shift at a place of employment shall provide and maintain a first aid room.

It is mandatory for all workers to report any injury to their employer. Whenever an accident occurs and a worker is injured, first aid must be applied immediately. A record of all treatments must be maintained by the employer.

The COR audit tool checks to confirm that an organization undergoing audit meets the implementation of the first aid regulation. A COR auditor will review the following key elements:

  1. Documented procedures for the provision and maintenance of first aid comply with regulations.

  2. Qualified First Aiders are on-site and in close proximity to first aid kits and/or stations.

  3. Posting of First Aider training certificates and WSIB “In Case of Injury” poster meet requirements.

  4. First Aiders have current training certificates and are routinely scheduled re-certification training.

  5. Periodic inspections of first aid facilities and equipment is conducted and documented.

  6. Training programs and safety orientations clearly cover worker responsibilities when injured.

  7. All treatments and/or advice is recorded on a form that complies with the 1101 regulation.

Any organization that can provide positive responses to the above is in a good place, and likely on its way to building proactive workplace safety environment.
